Girls Wrestling

After a long, hard-fought season, the girls wrestling team broke barriers from previous seasons and showed the community what they are capable of doing. Last season, after having four wrestlers compete in the state finals, this group of lady warriors advanced seven athletes to the state finals. This team also won their regional championship, beating the closest opponent, Southport, by two points.

From the beginning of the season, this team was a powerhouse in the girls wrestling world. They showed that with a large number of girls they had, they could compete with other top programs.

“At the first tournament of our season you could see how far everyone had come,” sophomore wrestler Akilah Rusununguko-Taylor said.

Doing well at these tournaments is a crucial step in showing others, especially other female athletes, what they are capable of. The team wants them to know that girls are capable of doing big things athletically.

“It's important because it shows girls can do anything guys can do and is a good source for girls to learn to be [tough],” senior wrestler Tianna Russell said.

Other than competition, it is important for the wrestlers to bond with each other. They like to do this in many different ways such as going out, singing, dancing, and even wrestling.

“My favorite moment was our first duel meet. We got to see each other wrestle for the first time and we were all excited,” Rusununguko-Taylor said.

Overall, the team is happy to bring a new team to the world of Warren Central Athletics and are hoping to make it a positive addition.

“It’s important because for one it’s really the first actual full girls wrestling team that we’ve ever had and that’s special,” Rusununguko-Taylor said.
