Q:What was the initial motivation for you becoming a media specialist?

An: I started out as an English teacher, but I love the independent choice and the relaxed atmosphere of libraries. So after a couple of years as an English teacher, I went back to get my library certification. I still love choosing my own books to read today.

Q: What was one of your most unique experiences at your previous school?

An: My last school was PreK-8, so I worked with lots of different age groups.  Sometimes, I’d see four year olds in the morning and then conduct computer classes with 13 year olds in the afternoon. I had to think about how to speak to different age groups.

Q: Is there a lack of diversity in the libraries?

An: Like in teaching, minorities are underrepresented in libraries.  There have been recent scholarships and programs to try and increase diversity in library staff. Unlike in the past, there are an abundance of texts by diverse authors from many perspectives. So, a library can be diverse, but it means finding the right books and authors that reflect the larger culture and making those books accessible to everyone.

Q:What was the reason you came to Warren?

An: I had been at my last school for 10 years, and I enjoyed my time there, but I was looking for something different.  I enjoy reading teen and adult texts, so a high school was a good option. ]I also wanted to join a community of diverse students where lots of different voices and texts would be appreciated. I look forward to seeing the library when it’s fully open.
