Girls lacrosse season has finally begun and the girls are excited. The girls are looking for ways to grow together and bond, so they can have a good start to their season.
“I am looking forward to our team learning and growing together. I really love how the lacrosse team always has a bond of support and encouragement. Our team has grown from only having enough to play a game to being able to make a Varsity and JV team, so we are really excited to have so many people who enjoy lacrosse,” junior Justice Galan said.
The girls are working very hard and even trying new drills to advance their skills. Having as much practice as they can even when the weather is not the best, the girls are getting as much work done as possible before their first game.
“We have been practicing every day, we have been working on ground balls, throwing and catching, and sometimes even practicing after practice just to ensure we have mastered the skill,” senior Celeste Wilkerson said.
These girls love to see each other improve, and that all starts with finding their place on the team. Being comfortable with the position you’re playing will not only help you but the whole team in the end.
“One of our major team goals this year is for each player to improve and really find a space or position where each girl will feel comfortable and be able to dominate. We want our team to be able to feel confident and trust one another to unify and dominate,” Galan said.
The girls have come a long way from not having many people on the team to having more than enough, which is really good, but with that comes a lot of help with different positions and learning the game.
“Lacrosse at Warren has grown and with a lot of new people, one thing we need to work on is defense. We have been struggling with defense not getting set up in the right position, but it is something we are working on,” Wilkerson said.
Coming back from the COVID years, the team has a few things they’ve been trying to improve and has significantly grown from having just the right amount of players to play a game, to having more than just enough for a JV and Varsity team.
“With more girls on the team, we can scrimmage much more than we would last year. This has helped us improve because we are simulating a real game feel, which is one of the best ways to improve your lacrosse skills because you will never fully understand the game until you play in it,” Wilkerson said.
The coaches always have their best interest in mind for the girls, and encourage the girls to have fun and enjoy it while it lasts.
“Our coaches always strive to make us better each and every day. Coach Roberts has always had his famous line, ‘Play Hard, Don't Suck.’ Our coaches have taught us the importance of hard work and dedication, but also how this is the only time we can play girls' high school lacrosse ever, so we might as well make the most of it,” Galan said.
The upperclassmen are doing their best to show leadership for the team and give the younger classmen a place where they can advance and become the best that they can be.
“As this is my first year as an upperclassman, I hope to demonstrate how we, as a lacrosse team, have always shown good sportsmanship. I want to help others become the best lacrosse players they can be as our graduated players did for me,” Galan said.
