Quiz bowl offers competitive Jeopardy-like experience

Similar to the Jeopardy Game Show, Quiz Bowl  is a quick-paced buzzer competition in which a five player team competes to answer questions that cover academic subjects and current events.

Students can benefit from being on the quiz bowl teaming because it opens them up to new opportunities. Being on the team also enhances skills students may already have like listening, attention to detail, academic knowledge, and teamwork skills.

“There are numerous benefits to participating in the Quiz Bowl/Academic Team. Students enhance their listening skills and academic knowledge. They also experience team play and cooperation,” Head quiz bowl coach Leona Glazebrooks said.

The head coach of the Quiz Bowl team has been participating in activities for over ten years. She cherishes her position working with students, wanting them to be great.

“I have sponsored and been involved in various extracurricular activities. However, I cherish two positions more than the others, my five years as Head Coach of the Quiz Bowl Team and my ten years with the Girls Lacrosse Team,” Glazebrooks said.

To qualify for the team, you just need to be a Warren Central student with good academic scores. Members should be willing to attend the many practices because there are a total of seven competitions with three to four tournaments. Practice will be held after school every Monday.

“The only qualification is that you are a Warren Central student in good standing.  Since this club has to compete with other sports and clubs, we ask that team members attend as many practices and competitions as possible. From September to February, we have seven matches, three to four tournaments, and practice after school on Mondays,” Glazebrooks said.

In order to join the teams, students will need to join one of many call-out meetings or to start attending practices. Instructions will be given on the Canvas and also during morning announcements. The team just had their last competition this past February, and if interested in being on the team attend the call-out meeting next school year in September.

“For the 2022-2023 school year, our last competition was in February.  I encourage anyone interested. Please attend next year's call-out meeting in September,” Glazebrook said.
