The Boys Golf team, not typically viewed as one of the most prominent sports at Warren Central, is competing at the MIC golf tournament, in hopes to gain attention for the assets they bring to Warren Athletics.
“It really boils down to proving others wrong about Warren golf that makes it such a big tournament, every team at that MIC tournament knows none of us are seen as golf schools nor are seen as being remotely good at it, so we are all there to prove each other and outside sources wrong,” senior Josiah Hardy said.
At the MIC tournament, competition is higher and the stakes are higher than normal, because the winner captures the conference title. When events like this are on the schedule, it is harder to keep everybody’s head in the right spot, but they know it is a crucial part of having success at the tournament.
“We want to win but we can't get stressed, we have to take it slow, and remember our coaching,” sophomore Caden Kerr said.
These Warriors know that they have a lot to prove in this tournament, especially against conference teams that will provide some of the toughest competition they will see this season. Some of these schools are even considered rivals for the team, which gives them more motivation to take them down.
“The biggest is with LC,” Hardy joked. “When we play them we have a dedicated trophy that we will be bringing home this year. So seeing them at tournaments there’s always that extra fire to let them know to stay up on 56th street.”
The MIC tournament also provides good experience for upcoming golfers who have not been a part of something like this before. With five other major schools from around Indianapolis to compete with, the younger part of the team has a lot they can learn from this experience.
“It is such a big match because instead of facing just one or two other teams in your area, you're facing them all,” freshman Noah Hess said.
Golf is a sport where it is easy to get frustrated with yourself. With all the factors that come into play on a golf course, such as wind, trees, and sand, it is very common to make a mistake.
“Encouragement is great in a match like this,” Kerr stated. “When I see a teammate I want to encourage them, and they encourage me. Golf requires a high rate of concentration, and be mentally tough. Encouragement from anyone and everyone is amazing for me.”
