Isaac Wilson Serves

Warren Central Boys Tennis has become the epitome of unheard and unseen. This year, they have their eyes set on some big goals. They are returning essentially all of their varsity lineup that, last season, saw the start of a new era of Warren Central Tennis. With this more experienced group of athletes, they have their sights set on their first sectional championship since 1996.

“The boys are putting in the hard work during practices, and it shows in their matches,” assistant coach Kathryn Basham said. “We are both physically and mentally ready to compete in MIC and sectionals. We look forward to a winning season.”

Having most of last year’s team returning is a big advantage for these Warriors because they have a lot more experience when it comes to tough matches and opponents that they face often. One player who can make a big difference on this year’s squad is sophomore Jack Basham. Playing as the number three singles player this season, he has the ability to make or break this team.

“Jack Basham would probably be the difference maker because last year he played number three and he was a freshman,” head coach John Patterson said. “This year he's a sophomore. I think his matches will be pivotal on whether we win or lose.”

Jack Basham has also become a leader for this team, and his teammates are intaking his support every step of the way. He encourages his teammates to give all of their effort at all times.

“[Jack] is a good teammate because he always motivates us during our matches whether we are winning or losing,” sophomore Gilbert Ernst said.

As far as personal goals go, Jack Basham wants to work on the little things. For this team, the little things will go a long way in making them better. They are excited to see how these improvements play out this season.

“I definitely wanna work on my serve, get it stronger,” Jack Basham said. “That was my weakness last season. And then get my forehand more consistent.”

The captain of this year’s team is senior Evan Wilson, who is leading this group to better days. As the number one singles player, he not only has responsibilities during matches but outside of them as well.

“Some of my expectations for the team this season would be for everybody to show up on time, be ready to practice, and when it's match day, be prepared to play," Wilson said. “It's not as important if we win or lose. As long as everybody's giving it their all and they're wanting to be here, that's fine by me.”

Wilson and Jack Basham are top five in their respective class rankings, proving how much time and effort they put into both aspects of being a student athlete. It also adds to their leadership qualities, as it encourages the rest of the team to follow their lead.

One more part of this team that will be very influential is new talent. Coaches say freshman Xavier Taylor brings a lot to the table and will be somebody to keep an eye on this season. His teammates are ecstatic to have him on their side and are ready to see the difference he can make.

“He’s gonna be a difference maker,” Patterson said. “He is the one that is in the spotlight, and I think he is gonna surprise some people this year.”
