A look at this drum major’s path to success

Madison Franklin joined the Gold Brigade marching band because in middle school, her band teacher discussed it with the class all the time, and she really enjoyed making music.

“I really was into music at the time. I didn’t know a lot about my instrument, [which was alto saxophone at the time], but I could see myself doing a lot of this in the future,” Franklin said.

Franklin has said that when she joined the marching band her eighth grade year, it was a train wreck. She was really introverted and anxious all the time. She referred to herself as a follower for her first two years of marching band because she refused to ask questions and didn’t know what was going on.

“It was fun in a lot of ways too because I met a lot of people that I wouldn’t have just randomly ran into in the hallway and they set the path for the rest of my high school career,” Franklin said.

She decided to continue marching band because of the people she met along the way. She wouldn’t have made it as far as she has now without those people, and they helped her improve in many ways.

“I knew that I would have band class with them and it was nice to have people that I knew, especially freshman year, when usually people know no one. It’s just the people I was around and the bonds that we made really just wanna make you come back each year,” Franklin said.

Franklin has high hopes for the future of the program.

“I also hope that we keep getting kids to join that are interested in music and that want to pursue a future in music education, because I feel like those kids are the kids that put in a lot of effort. We want this Gold Brigade to go to state,” Franklin said.
